Lifeboat delayed due to Friday 13th

A new generation of lifeboat was delayed a day because the crew did not want it to arrive on Friday the 13th.

The deadline for the £2.5m Tamar class RNLI lifeboat, Longhope, was put back as it was considered by many to be an unlucky day for mariners.

The Tamar, which arrived on Saturday afternoon, is described as the most technologically advanced class of lifeboat ever designed by the charity. Longhope, Orkney, follows Peterhead in getting the new class of boat.

Kevin Kirkpatrick, coxswain of Longhope RNLI lifeboat, said of the arrival: "There is a great atmosphere around the station as the crew are all excited about the new Tamar class lifeboat."

John Caldwell, RNLI divisional inspector for Scotland, said: "RNLI lifeboat crews respond to the call for help in all conditions any time of the day or year.

"This is why we believe it is essential to provide our volunteer crews with the best training and equipment possible to ensure they can undertake their role safely and surely."
