Britain has just basked in its longest and hottest summer since records began in 1659, the Met Office has revealed. The average temperature from May to September was 16.2°C (61.2°F).
The previous record of 15.9°C (60.6°F) was in 1947.
Met Office spokesman Wayne Elliott said: “It is extraordinary how many records have been broken — in all parts of Britain.”
July was the sunniest and hottest month on record, with 263 sunshine hours and temperatures of 36.5°C (97.7°F). September averaged a record 15.4°C (59.7°F).
Mr Elliott added: “All the evidence points to significant levels of global warming.”
The amazing temperatures confirm the phenomenon of the new season created by global warming dubbed “summertumn” — featured in Saturday’s Sun. And it hasn’t finished yet.
Yesterday it hit 20°C (68°F) in Lee-on-Solent, Hants.

Avg in summer 61 degrees? FFS, I'd always have a sweater on.
I've only ever been in Spring and Fall. You mean it doesn't get much warmer??
Now you know how I was able to sit outside at night in shorts and a t-shirt while you and your dad donned coats.. it was tropical to me.
