Sea Point residents are seeing red over a new bar in Main Road called "That F King Place" and have demanded the name be changed to something less offensive. But Irishman Barry Woods, who opened the bar next to Adult World, says he has no intention of changing it.
Indeed, he told Weekend Argus he intends opening more bars with the same name elsewhere in Cape Town.
Woods said he had consulted solicitors before registering his company TFP Co (That F King Place Company) to ensure it wasn't offensive.
"So far I've heard nothing from the council and have had no letters of complaint from anyone."
But the city's legal department has confirmed that it intends serving notice on the bar's owners and will call for the removal of the signs which are illegal because no permission has been granted.
AG van der Westhuizen, chairperson of the London Road Owners' Association in Sea Point, said he had received a number of complaints about the obnoxious name.
"We feel this is not an appropriate or acceptable name for an establishment near schools, a residential family area and in a section of Main Road that still looks like a slum."
He said tourists were about to arrive for season and would think they were in the middle of a red light district.
JP Smith, city councillor for Sea Point, said the whole area around That F King Place was the heart of crime, grime and sleaze - with drugs, crack houses and prostitution flourishing.
