Greg Marshall and Adrienne Foley, married in Levin on Saturday, played 18 holes of minigolf to decide who would relinquish their surname.
Wearing a bridal dress, Ms Foley had clothing to battle with as well as her husband's form.
"Greg's a keen golfer. He's been playing since pretty much forever," she said.
Perhaps that was why she chose to engage in a few psychological games before the big event. "For about five months, I'd been going round the house saying, `Gregory James Foley, that sounds good'."
The rub of the green went Mr Marshall's way for eight holes, but a hole-in-one on the ninth put Ms Foley back in the game. "The pressure really came on after that."
The action went to and fro at the Foxton venue, but Mr Marshall pulled ahead to a three-shot lead on the 17th hole and clinched it on the last one, she said.
"He got there, he won, so I have to take his name."
Mrs Marshall wasn't sure where the idea had come from. "I thought, `Why do they always take the guy's name?"'
The contest had been possible only because they were both quite relaxed about their names, she said. In any future contests, however, Mr Marshall would have to watch out, she said. "Next time, it's pool - or something more even."
