Ring -o - Star

A beggar was given an expensive donation when a man dropped a diamond solitaire ring into his collection box. It is thought the owner had considered selling it to a jeweller but changed his mind and gave it to the vagrant in Shrewsbury town centre instead.

Police want the man to get in touch in case he dropped it by mistake on either Monday or Tuesday. It is believed to be an engagement ring and is being held by police until the owner comes forward.

Officers said they did not want to reveal its estimated worth.

Pc Dave Walton, from West Mercia Police, said the homeless man was sitting outside Marks and Spencer when the ring was dropped in the box.

"We just want to make sure the owner of the ring meant to give it to the homeless man and had not dropped it by mistake," he said. "The gentleman he gave it to did not see him drop it and we believe a short time beforehand the owner had tried to sell it to a jewellery shop. I would ask this man to please contact me at the station to identify his ring and let us know what his wishes are and whether he meant to drop it."
