No.1 Auction

A collection of every number one UK single since the charts started is expected to fetch £25,000 at auction.

Stephen Hitchcock, 35, was given the stack of records by his dad at the age of 12 and carried on buying the latest hits.

Now the collection - made up of 2,139 old 78s, 7-inch and 12-inch vinyl records, CD singles and digital downloads - is going under the hammer at the famous Abbey Road Studios later this month.

The first UK single, crooner Al Martino's Hear In My Heart, was bought by Mr Hitchcock's grandfather in 1952.

The collection covers everything from the big band hits of the 1950s to disco, punk, hip-hop, house and Britpop.

Music expert John Collins said: "Whether you're a lover of vinyl or downloads, this is a music lover's dream.

"I've never seen anything as extensive as this with so many rare pieces. When I saw it, I was blown away".

Included in the sale is a 1955 Pye Black Box to listen to the 78s and an iPod for the downloads. The sale is on July 28.
