Smart swimwear

This may look like the bikini Ursula Andress raised temperatures with in Bond flick Dr No - but it is actually the world's first swimwear to measure the risk of skin cancer.

A built-in sensor records the strength of harmful UV rays from the sun and alerts the bather on a digital display.

The battery-powered unit registers UV intensity in 0.1 steps from 0 to 20. A level of 3 to 5 would be "moderate", with 8 to 10 "very high" and anything above 11 "extreme".

The SmartSwim bikini is washable and safe to wear in the sea or chlorinated water. Made by Solestrom, it is available on the internet at £103 - and is the firm's fastest selling suit.

A spokesman said: "We feel that sun safety goes hand in hand with swimsuit design."

An estimated 100,000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year.

The disease kills around 1,800 people annually.
