A number of startled lorry drivers contacted police on Sunday after seeing the two boys driving a red stationwagon along the Newell Highway in the rural north of New South Wales state.
Police caught up with the unidentified boys after they had travelled about 85 km (53 miles) at speeds of up to 90 kmh (55 mph) from Boggabilla on the way to Moree, a spokeswoman said.
Knowing they were in trouble, the brothers quickly jumped into their normal spots in the back seat of their grandmother's car after they pulled over.
But the 10-year-old forgot to put the car's automatic transmission into park and the car rolled off again down the highway, so he promptly jumped back into the driver's seat and applied the brakes.
Police said the remorseful boys were given a stern talking to before they were reunited with their grandparents.

even the australian kids are tough..but so scary when you think of what could have happened...
they would have gotten more than a stern talking to at my house...i believe in small amts of child abuse..and think a ass whupping might come in handy right about now...
You gotta love the Aussies ... just a stern talking to by the police... if that was here or the States they'd have called in the social bloody services
