Love bush

Japan - An azalea tree trimmed in the shape of a heart is in full bloom in a residential area in Tokyo, attracting attention from passers-by.

The tree planted in the garden at the home of Shigeru Namiki, 79, and his wife 75-year-old Sueko, in the Kugayama district of Suginami-ku, was presented by her elder brother, who was a gardener, 52 years ago to celebrate the couple's marriage.

It has been trimmed into the shape of a heart and when it is in full bloom, the green heart turns red. The tree, which had measured 20 centimeters high and 30 centimeters wide when it was first planted, has grown seven-fold over half a century.

"We took care of the tree everyday, even on rainy and snowy days. The tree is a symbol of conjugal love," Shigeru Namiki said.
