A supermarket chain is today launching a range of "ugly" looking seasonal fruit at discounted prices for use in cooking.
The "class two" strawberries, tomatoes, plums and other fruit will be either visually flawed or oddly shaped, according to Waitrose. They will be marketed for use in cookery and jam-making amid concerns over food waste, the chain said.
The packs cost about 50p to £1 less a kilo than their perfect-looking equivalents. Waitrose fruit buyer Tom Richardson said: "Supermarkets are often criticised for rejecting fruit and vegetables because they don't look picture perfect."

great idea...and hope they stop spraying that shinny crap on them to make them look better...
Dunno if I told you this, but I sell fruit & veg for a living, but people do "buy with their eyes", me personally I'd rather have something that was slightly misshapen, but tasted great ,rather than something that had been irradiated and polished with chemicals.
Dom, Will you please deliver some veg this afternoon... please, ohh, please..
i never knew you were in fruit and veggies..how cool...i buy with my eye as for ripness, but could give a crap what it actually looks like...and i hate that they put that waxy crap on them to make them shinny..yea, im all for flavor...stores sell these firm plump red tomatoes and taste like cardboard....i miss home grown veggies...
