Fish n chips double in price
FISH and chip lovers will soon find their wallets are taking a battering - as the price of a portion soars to £5.
Britain's traditional cheap-andcheerful meal has cost between £1.80 and £3 in recent years.
But the increasing scarcity of white fish such as cod and a 50 per cent rise in potato prices in the past two months have sent costs rocketing.
Fish and chip shop owners say can no longer compete on price with giant fast food firms.
And they warn that we will be paying £5 for a fish and chip meal by the end of the summer.
Rick Horabin, who runs Blackpool's Seniors Fish Shop, said: "Fish and chips used to be supreme but now you have KFC, Burger King and McDonalds so price-sensitivity is very important.
"The price of cod has doubled to around £40 per stone and potatoes have gone up by a similar amount in a matter of months. It makes it very tough on business."
Bobby Lynton, of the rival Granada Fish Bar, added: "One of the main things we're suffering from is the price of potatoes.
"We put our prices up a few months back because we needed to to cover the increased costs. But we don't want to do it again because people are not going to pay a fortune for their fish and chips."
Susan Tolman, from the British Potato Council, said the price of Maris Piper spuds had gone from £110 to £160 per ton in two months.
She said: "Prices are up because fewer potatoes were planted in 2005 due to poor prices in previous years."

oh my goddess..what a tragedy...cant imagine england with out fish and chips...ahhh, you guys would pay that wouldnt ya...what is that in american?..is it double? $10, holy shit..that's alot for taters and fish..
I'm NOT paying a fiver ! sod that ! I'll make my own , I can get them wholesale. I love me fish n chips
i learned how to make great fried taters by a english chef..about putting the fries in the hot grease...and immediately taking them out till grease got hot again and then putting the fries back in the oil...so smart..bout the only thing you brits can cook well is fish and chips..
Another way of doing it ( this is how I do my roast tatties) is to parboil them in salt water , then chuck 'em in the fryer... they come out all fluffy on the inside and nice n crisp on the out.
